Massage Therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues to enhance a person’s health and well-being. Massage techniques are commonly applied with hands, fingers, elbows, forearms, knees, feet and some other devices.
Massage can make beneficial physiological changes in the body, including decreasing the production of stress hormones, lowering blood pressure, increasing available levels of seratonin, increasing blood and lymph circulation, reduces painful muscle contractions and spasms, and reduces nerve compression.
Combining deep tissue massage with stretching techniques, our sports massages are designed to help proactively enhance muscle conditioning and help treat most soft tissue injuries. By tailoring each sports massage to the client’s individual needs, we aim to enable clients to get more from their chosen sport.
Our sports massages don’t only prove beneficial to people who participate in sport. Many of our chiropractic clients find our sports massages to be an effective follow on treatment to aid the maintenance of muscle, tendon and ligament health long term.
Furthermore, as all of our sports massages are tailored to the individuals needs and targets specific areas causing aches and pains, many clients find our deep tissue massages to be a highly effective means of relaxation.
Your first visit will be approximately 60 minutes. During this time, your massage therapist will take a full case history to assess your current health and any previous conditions or existing symptoms. A physical examination will take place, so it is best to bring a pair of shorts and, for ladies, a vest top or similar. This allows your therapist to see alignment of your hips, shoulders and spine. Privacy is always provided and if you are uncomfortable with any area being uncovered then do tell your therapist. It will never be a problem.
Most people find that 6 to 10 sessions are sufficient to address straightforward problems. The number and frequency of treatment will depend on several factors and will be discussed with you.
Once your health improves, patients find that coming in for maintenance and wellness once a month will keep the problems that were first presented at bay.
During your course of massage care, you can expect to feel some physical changes as your body gets used to the change in muscle tension and usage. Some people feel ‘on top of the world’ after a massage, however sometimes when pain is acute and built up over a long time it’s not uncommon to feel sore or stiff the next day. It’s often the day after that the benefits really start to feel apparent.
You will be given advice on aftercare to help get the most out of your treatment. It is important that you talk to your therapist if you feel worried about anything during or after your treatment.
If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, then it will be best to rearrange your appointment because massage stimulates circulation and can spread infection further around the body resulting in your cold/flu symptoms worsening. Therefore in order to get the most out of your treatment it is best to reschedule when you are feeling better.
Unlike massage, a chiropractic adjustment would benefit you greatly when you have cold or flu symptoms to strengthen your immune system and help you to recover quicker. Please call the clinic to reschedule your appointments as necessary.
